So, how should a great project like SoftBox/DocSet be organized? If you want to compete with Microsoft,
it's prolly easiest (heh, well, not easy... ;) to make it a free project. If, however, you choose to
walk the commercial path through life, one thing's for sure: You have to, in some way, join with one of
the big ones. Typically Sun, Big Blue, Oracle or someone else who is big and wants to get bigger...
And who wants to bet on it... And it would relieve if they looked in the direction that Java points out... Even within these two ways of organization there are different ways to go. You could join a freeware group, e.g. FSF, if you chose the freeware alternative. But then, it would be "their" project, not ours... And if you cooperate with for instance Sun, you can either start a company and write an agreement of cooperation, or you could actually let them run the business, and just show them how to get though with it. It's hard (and critical) to decide. |
