I'm a big fan of
DEEP PURPLE

They are simply the best and if you haven't heard them, it's about time you did. If you let this opportunity pass by to discover the greatest band in the universe, you should consider a brain transplant. But I have to warn you: If you once listen to a tune by the great ones, you will soon become a purpoholic and never ever listen to anything else.

These are the Deep Purple concerts I've attended so far:

  Deep Purple was:
  Jon Lord - organ
  Ritchie Blackmore - lead guitar
  Ian Gillan - vocals
  Ian Paice - drums
  Roger Glover - bass guitar

Deep Purple
Johanneshovs Isstadion, Stockholm, Sweden
Saturday, November 13, 1993

This was the first time I saw Deep Purple live. I had built up enormous expectations through listening to all their albums countless times. Since I first heard Deep Purple when I was about eight years old (around 1986, that is), I had dreamed of seeing them live in concert. Now it happened! It was so exciting and unbelievable that they were really there, alive and existing.
The concert was probably one of the best DP shows ever. It was also the third last DP show featuring Ritchie Blackmore, my biggest hero at the time, on lead guitar. I was, of course, totally overwhelmed by their performance and became an even more fanatic DP fan than before.
No reviews available for this show (as far as I know), but here's one from the Oslo gig two days after.

Deep Purple
Lugnets Skidstadion, Falun, Sweden
Wednesday, June 26, 1996

The first time I saw Steve Morse and I was relieved to see that his musical conversation with Jon worked so well. Gillan looked a bit fat and not in the best shape, though.

Deep Purple
Solnahallen, Stockholm, Sweden
Saturday, October 3, 1998

A good concert, though the crowd was a bit sleepy. But Ian Gillan was back in shape!
Reading a good review is a good way to re-experience this gig.

Deep Purple
Plaza de Toros, Estepona, Spain
Friday, July 23, 1999

Fabulous show held at a bullring with a totally mad Spanish crowd.
      A review of the show.

Deep Purple
The Old Ice Hall, Helsinki, Finland
Thursday, April 6, 2000

I was there and so was Jon, Rog, Ian, Paicey and Steve. On the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki I met some great people. Karin and Benny are some of the most passionate DP fans on this planet. In the hotel bar after the show, we also met Jon and Roger. But that's another story...
Don't forget to read my friends' reviews of the Helsinki show: Karin's review and Benny's review. There's also a good, well-written review describing Deep Purple's music in a poetic way.

Deep Purple and the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra
The Globe Arena, Stockholm, Sweden
Saturday, October 7, 2000

The highlight of the evening was Jon Lord's Concerto For Group And Orchestra, which is a wonderful piece of music. Special thanks to maestro Jon Lord, Marco de Goeij and "the headbanging conductor" maestro Paul Mann, without whom this event would still only be a dream.
Read Paul Mann's special feature on the Concerto project or a long analysis of the work.

Deep Purple
5-Øren, Copenhagen, Denmark

A standard show with some festival feeling. Don Airey temporarily replaced Jon Lord on keyboards and did a god job.

News

Jon Lord has left Deep Purple and been replaced by Don Airey. Don did a great job when I saw them in Denmark last year. Jon will now have more time for his solo projects. Get the latest news at The Jon Lord Fan Site - Pictured Within.
Jon played his last shows in September 2002 at the "farewell tour" of the UK, where he shared the organ with Don Airey. Read some reviews of the unforgettable moments.
It's been a while since the last album, Abandon, was released. I hope they will release a new studio album soon.
